Competition: Northern League - Division 1

Ashington vs North Shields

By Brian Bennett

There was a feeling of déjà vu for Ashington at The dwmedia Stadium on Tuesday night when high flying North Shields took all three points courtesy of a strike by Chris McDonald midway through the first half.

The result saw the Robins return to second top of the Ebac Northern League’s first division whilst the Colliers went down to their second narrow defeat inside four days.

However as at Sunderland Ryhope CW on Saturday, the Wansbeck outfit deserved to take some reward from the contest for their overall performance over the 90 minutes.

But again as on Wearside, for all their patient build up play and well constructed moves, it was the final third which ultimately proved to be their downfall.

Ashington skipper Ben Harmison was a late withdrawal due to work commitments so manager Ian Skinner brought Thomas Kalthoeber in at centre back for his first full start of the season whilst former Shields player Craig Spooner was handed the captains armband.

In front of another bumper attendance of 666, the visitors – who are still battling on three fronts with the League, Buildbase FA Vase and Techflow Northumberland Senior Cup – got off to a sensational start as they took the lead after only 70 seconds through their in-form and hotshot striker Dan Wilson.
Wilson got possession and – allowed time by the home side – struck a wonder goal from 20 yards with his left foot which arced wide of home ‘keeper Karl Dryden and just inside the upright.

Ashington’s first effort came on 14 minutes following neat work down the left involving Bobby Taylor and Dean Briggs which ended with the latter lashing the ball over from distance.

Four minutes later, the Colliers drew level with a gloriously constructed goal. Briggs switched play from right to left with a sublime pass which found the overlapping Jordan Summerly who advanced to the by line before pulling the ball across for Lewis Suddick who fired in from close range to record his second goal in as many matches.

However, a significant turning point arrived in the 22nd minute. Briggs again switched the play on this occasion to the right and when Craig Spooner returned the ball into his path, a curler by Briggs was superbly pushed away by ‘keeper Oliver Marshall.

Play switched immediately with the visitors being awarded a free kick and when the ball found McDonald on the left, the full back’s low right foot shot crept past an unsighted Dryden and just inside the post.

The Colliers, after being guilty of careless passing early in the game, improved considerably and had a lot of possession. On the half hour Suddick tried his luck with a 25 yarder which was held at the second attempt by Marshall.

Two minutes later, only the woodwork prevented Shields from extending their lead. A corner on the right swung in by Cartwright fell to Gary Ormston whose effort struck the post and rebounded to safety.

Ashington continued to press for an equaliser before half time and after Marshall had held an effort from Adam Johnson, Ben Sampson and Spooner combined to set up Taylor but he blazed his shot well over.
Incredibly, the second half was devoid of a notable chance until the 73rd minute when the Shieldsmen broke but Wilson clipped wide. Seconds later, at the other end, Marshall fielded an effort from Johnson.

Then with 12 minutes left on the clock, David Robinson seized onto a back pass from Curtis Coppen which lacked pace but the midfielder was denied by a great block by Dryden.

Home boss Ian Skinner made three substitutions and in the final stages, sent Coppen up front. And in the fourth minute of stoppage time, Ashington had shouts for a penalty turned aside by referee Lewis Reynolds after Coppen went to ground under challenge inside the area.

Sunderland Ryhope C.W. vs Ashington

By Brian Bennett

Ashington’s run of three consecutive wins came to an end on Saturday when a late goal from substitute Denver Morris sealed all three points for Sunderland Ryhope CW.

However, Morris’s 80th minute volley was a bitter pill for the Colliers to swallow. Ian Skinner’s side completely bossed the second period and after trailing to a first half opener from Kyle Davis, deservedly equalised with a terrific strike from debutant Lewis Suddick.

But the recreation ground at Ryhope has turned into a bogey venue for the Wansbeck outfit who have failed to take a single point from four visits over the past six seasons.

Saturday’s game was billed as a top of the table clash in the Ebac Northern League’s first division but chances were few and far between in a first half which the home side dominated for the opening 25 minutes. Ian Skinner’s outfit grew into the game and gave as good as they got until the interval.

Early doors, James Ellis and Bobby Taylor lashed efforts over the bar for their respective sides before the 13th minute was certainly unlucky for Ashington as Ryhope took the lead with a scrappy goal.

Following a free-kick, the ball pinged around the penalty area until it found Davis at the far post who struck a low shot which took a deflection and nestled inside the net.

But within a minute, the visitors should have been terms when Liam Doyle played the ball down the right flank for Suddick.

The newcomer whipped over a brilliant cross which was met by Dean Briggs on the six yards box but he directed his header straight into the hands of home ‘keeper James Winter.

Midway through, Adam Johnson turned and curled wide after receiving from Doyle then the same two players linked to set up Suddick who clipped over from a tight angle.

Four minutes before the break, Yannick Aziakonou played a lovely diagonal pass out wide for Doyle but the full back delayed crossing the ball and was eventually blocked out.

Ashington started the second period in dominant fashion and with only 90 seconds on the clock, Taylor, Briggs and Doyle all combined to set up Suddick who headed over.

Five minutes in and it was the prominent Suddick whose pass put Briggs through with only Winter to beat. The number ten advanced but then hesitated and eventually his weak effort was blocked by the stopper.

Play switched to the other end and a shot from Ellis was pushed around the post by ‘keeper Karl Dryden – then just past the hour mark, Suddick got the Colliers back on terms.

Doyle and Johnson were involved in the move down the right flank and when the latter played the ball in for Suddick, the debutant made no mistake, drilling a right footer home.

It was all Ashington pressure now but the only chance they fashioned saw a shot by Johnson held by Winter.

Dryden was called into action pushing away a 30 yards free-kick by Ellis and from the resultant corner on the right, the ‘keeper brilliantly tipped over a header from Chris Trewick.

At the other end, Taylor had a shot turned aside by Winter – then what proved to be the winner arrived with ten minutes remaining. A deep cross from the left found Morris at the far post who struck a right foot volley inside the far corner.

In the closing stages, Ashington manager Ian Skinner made a triple substitution and also threw skipper and centre back Ben Harmison up front – and in the last minute of the 90, Harmison was involved in moves which ended with Briggs unable to find the target.

vs

Sunderland RCA vs Ashington

By Brian Bennett

A late goal by substitute Bobby Taylor brought Ashington victory in their Ebac Northern League first division clash against Sunderland RCA at the LGV Park ground on Saturday.

Taylor’s 82nd minute strike eventually swung the pendulum in favour of the Colliers – deciding a match which sat in the balance and could have gone either way – but they were given a run for their money by a well drilled side that battled and scrapped from the first whistle.

The previous weekend, Ashington had played their first game for three and a half weeks when they beat Penrith at Woodhorn Lane. On Saturday, it was RCA’s first outing for a month – and fitness levels proved to be a significant factor during the final 20 minutes as the home side tired whilst the Colliers got stronger and stronger.

The visitors made the brighter start and with only 75 seconds on the clock, Ben Sampson and Danny Anderson linked on the right to set up Dean Briggs who cut inside and whipped a left foot shot narrowly wide of the upright.

However, the home outfit grew into the contest to gain the upper hand and in the ninth minute, they were denied by the woodwork.

Full back Kieran Charlton’s in-swinging corner on the right was met by Ben Errington whose header thudded against the post with Mark Davison’s follow up being cleared by Ashington skipper Ben Harmison.

Five minutes later, it was Curtis Coppen to the rescue, clearing the ball off the line after Michael Annang-Colquhoun had burst clear down the right and chipped the ball over advancing ‘keeper Karl Dryden.

But in a half where chances were at a premium, the final opportunity fell Ashington’s way after they had forced a corner on the left.

Anderson and Paul Robinson combined neatly and after the latter had weaved one way then the other, his right foot curler flashed just wide of the post.

Early in the second half, a ball played in by Robinson from a corner was pushed out by ‘keeper Keaton Marrs but shortly afterwards when Ashington were under pressure, Colquhoun was foiled by Dryden and Davison squandered a marvellous chance as he blasted the rebound wide.

Minutes later, Dryden thwarted Davison on two occasions, firstly saving with his feet then blocking the ball to his left.

Ashington manager Ian Skinner made a double change shortly before the half way mark introducing Taylor and Jordan Lashley for Craig Spooner and Robinson whilst switching Briggs into midfield.

As in the first period, chances evaporated and the next one came on the 73 minutes mark with Briggs glancing over a free kick from Anderson.

Nine minutes later Taylor broke the deadlock.

Liam Doyle found Briggs down the left and when his cross was headed out, the ball fell into the path of Taylor who unleashed a terrific low drive from 20 yards which beat Marrs at his near post and found the net.

In a nerve-jangling finale, a shot by Davison deflected off Harmison for a corner then in a swift counter attack, Ashington had a chance to seal the contest when Taylor laid the ball on a plate for Adam Johnson but he was denied by a great block from a home defender.

The final whistle brought the Colliers their first away win at RCA since the 2014/15 campaign, the same season when – along with this term – they also completed a season’s double over the Wearsiders.

vs

Ashington vs Penrith

By Brian Bennett

Ashington left it late – before they kick started the New Year with a win against basement side Penrith at The dwmedia Stadium on Saturday.

Trailing early on to a Jamie Armstrong penalty, the Wansbeck outfit eventually equalised on the hour through Jordan Lashley but it was not until the dying embers of the game that the home side wrapped up the points with goals from Adam Johnson and Dean Briggs.

The match – played out on a heavy pitch at Woodhorn Lane – was only one of three which went ahead in the first division of the Ebac Northern League and the victory saw the Colliers leapfrog over Newton Aycliffe to claim sixth place in the table.

Both sides (Ashington and Penrith) had been inactive for three weeks over the festive period but there was no sign of lethargy as they went toe to toe with each other in a contest which never dropped in tempo throughout.

The Colliers made inroads in the ninth minute when the ball came in from the right flank and Penrith ‘keeper Aaran Taylor made a double save from a header Paul Robinson and the follow up by Ben Sampson.

In their next raid, Johnson fired over but the home crowd were silenced in the 13th minute when against the run of play, Charlie Birch surged into the Ashington area and went tumbling under a combined challenge from Liam Doyle and Yannick Aziakonou.

Referee Chris Joyce immediately pointed for a penalty and Armstrong sent Karl Dryden the wrong way with a coolly taken spot kick to the ‘keeper’s right,

Ashington exerted pressure and had a quarter hour spell of dominance. Sampson blasted over; an in-swinging corner from Lashley clipped the base of the post whilst Craig Spooner and Lashley snatched at further opportunities.

Penrith defended well and in the final third of the period, it was Dryden who prevented the Cumbrians from extending their lead.

In one break, Matthew Story was through until a superb retrieving tackle by Aziakonou inside the area averted the danger.

Shortly before the interval, Max Brown wriggled clear but was denied by the sprawling Dryden then the stopper parried another effort from the centre forward who missed a sitter somehow putting the rebound wide.

After the break, Robinson cut in from the flank and his shot hit the upright with Lashley having a shot blocked.

It was a day of frustration for the home side but they kept up the pressure and were patient – and eventually drew level with a brilliantly worked goal.

Not for the first time in the match, Jordan Summerly and Robinson linked superbly down the left and the latter sent over a precision cross which was headed home at the far post by Lashley.

The game then developed into a cat and mouse affair with Ashington going all out in search of a winner whilst their opponents posed a threat on the break.

However, several key aspects emerged in the final 20 minutes.

On a stamina sapping pitch, home manager Ian Skinner introduced fresh legs at different stages sending on Briggs, Bobby Taylor and Danny Anderson withdrawing Aziakonou, Lashley and Doyle whilst in the 75th minute, Penrith were reduced in number when Matthew Moynan – booked in the first half – upended Johnson and was sent off for a second yellow card offence.

Briggs fashioned an opportunity as he cut inside but lashed over and with the ten men defending resolutely, it looked as if the visitors were going to hold out for a point,

But five minutes from time, Johnson unlocked the door with a piece of sheer brilliance. He received the ball into his feet, spun sharply then whipped a low drive across Taylor and inside the far corner.

In the last minute of the 90, Ashington must have thought they had sealed the result when on a swift counter, substitute Taylor had a shot blocked and Briggs made no mistake blasting home the rebound to make it 3-1.

In time added on, a curling free kick by Birch thudded against the post but Ashington’s riposte saw Curtis Coppen play a great ball forward where Robinson and Summerly featured again before the ball was eventually blocked on the goal-line.

Whitley Bay vs Ashington

By Brian Bennett

Ashington’s uncanny knack of bouncing back after a disappointment came to the fore again at Hillheads on Saturday.

The Colliers went into the clash against Whitley Bay after being on the wrong end of a 4-0 scoreline at Crook a fortnight earlier but in dramatic style they swept the Seahorses aside with a powerful and dominant display which saw them run out winners by a convincing 6-1 margin.

What’s more in a contest where they had 25 attempts at goal, Ian Skinner’s outfit could have hit double figures – with home ‘keeper Dan Lister sparing his sides blushes of an even heavier defeat and was their man of the match by a considerable distance.

For the Wansbeck side, there were braces for debutant Jordan Lashley and recent newcomer Adam Johnson whilst Bobby Taylor – on his return to the starting line up – began the rout and Craig Spooner finished the display off with a spectacular effort minutes only minutes from the end.

Ashington were all pumped up from kick-off and the game was only 16 seconds old when Lister’s busy afternoon commenced.

A long ball from Ashington skipper Ben Harmison found Spooner whose lob from the edge of the area was tipped over by the young stopper.

In the third minute, a good move saw Taylor and Jordan Summerly combine on the left and it took another good stop by Lister at the foot of his post to deny the full-back as he pushed the ball away for a corner.

However, two minutes later – and against the run of play – the Seahorses took a shock lead.

Malcolm Morien slipped the ball through for Josh Gilchrist who steered a precise effort wide of ‘keeper Karl Dryden and just inside the post.

Undeterred, the Wansbeck side responded with Lister keeping out efforts from Taylor, Johnson and Lashley whilst Spooner skied over when well placed.

Despite Ashington’s total dominance, the Bay could so easily have doubled their advantage in the 19th minute when after the ball ping-ponged inside the box, Jamie Dunn dragged his shot narrowly wide of Dryden’s left hand post.

The visitors kept up the pressure and after Johnson had fired over, it came as no surprise when they drew level on the half hour.

Spooner found Taylor and the winger cut inside then unleashed a right footer from 25 yards which swerved in mid air and although Lister got his hand to it, he could only help the ball into the top corner.

Within a minute, the Colliers could have gone in front as Ben Sampson found Johnson but he curled his shot around Lister and past the upright.

Morien lashed over for Whitley before the Colliers went 2-1 up in the 37th minute with a goal from Lashley.

The ex Bedlington Terriers forward played a one-two with Liam Doyle then had time to pick his spot wide of Lister.

Right on the stroke of half time, Yannick Aziakonou made a great block to deny Gilchrist but Ashington nevertheless went in at the interval holding a slender 2-1 lead.

The Colliers made an identical start to proceedings after the break as they had done from the very first whistle when Lashley reached the by-line but his shot was turned around by Lister.

Dunn blasted over following a corner then at the other end Lister denied Doyle before Ashington widened the margin in the 54th minute.

Sampson – prominent in the midfield with an energetic display on a heavy pitch – won possession to slot the ball through for Lashley who advanced before firing wide of Lister.

On the hour, a free-kick by Johnson saw Curtis Coppen head over but three minutes later, Johnson scored his first goal for the Colliers as he met a cross from the impressive Spooner to lash in.

Seconds later, Lister repelled an effort from Doyle then at the other end, Dryden tipped over from Michael Speed.

The chances continued to stack up for the Colliers – Aziakonou and Doyle both going close before with ten minutes remaining, the latter found Johnson who fired under Lister for the fifth.

However, the best was still to come as in the 86th minute, Spooner put the icing on the cake with undoubtedly the goal of the game.

Lashley laid the ball off and Spooner did the rest – arrowing an unstoppable drive from the left which screamed into the top corner.

It was Ashington’s most convincing performance of the season and – without a game on Saturday (December 11) – they now prepare to face Newcastle United under 23’s in the quarter final of the Techflow Marine Northumberland Senior Cup at The dwmedia Stadium on Tuesday (December 14) where kick-off is 7.30pm.

04 December 2021 - Whitley Bay FC v. Ashington AFC

vs

Crook Town vs Ashington

By Brian Bennett

Ashington FC’s Danny Anderson had called on his team mates to be more consistent following the thrilling 3-3 draw with league leaders Consett seven days ago.

However, on Saturday, Anderson was in the midfield department and witnessed at first hand an Ashington display which tumbled from being red hot the previous week to cold as they went down to a 4-0 defeat at Crook Town at the Sir Tom Cowie Millfield.

It was the fourth reverse out of their last five away trips for the Wansbeck outfit but despite being out of sorts, the scoreline yet again paints a false picture as Ian Skinner’s side hit the woodwork on no fewer than four occasions during the contest and dominated possession during the second half.

Crook – who had looked a good side when the two sides met at Woodhorn Lane in the middle of last month (ironically when the Colliers were 4-0 victors) – deserved their success on the day hitting Ashington with body blows at crucial stages especially after the interval.

The visitors came close to taking the lead in the fifth minute with what would have been an identical opening goal from Craig Spooner from the previous week.

Adam Johnson found Luke Salmon down the left and when he crossed, Spooner directed his header wide of ‘keeper Ronan Makepeace’s left hand post.

It was the first of several game changing incidents as four minutes later Jamie Nash beat two defenders as he ventured into the Ashington area and when his venomous low right footer was pushed out by ‘keeper Adam McHugh, Ewan Forster blasted home the rebound from six yards.

Minutes later, a free kick from 20 yards from Max Cowburn was finger tipped onto the bar by Makepeace and cleared then midway through the period, an Anderson free-kick to the far post was headed wide by Ben Harmison.

Anderson tried an audacious effort from 35 yards which dipped just over after spotting Makepeace off his line then Johnson and Spooner combined down the left until the latter’s cross intended for Johnson was intercepted by a defender.

With half time approaching, Salmon came close to an equaliser after pressing the Crook back line.

He tenaciously won the ball and after playing a one-two with Spooner unleashed a power drive which thudded against the underside of the bar and was cleared.

But right on the stroke of the interval, McHugh was called upon to block superbly from Edward Thomas and as the striker followed up Karl Ross thwarted him with a block tackle.

Five minutes into the second half, Cowburn crossed from the right where Salmon’s first time effort from the edge of the area rebounded off the base of the post.

Within forty five seconds, Ashington were 2-0 down as Crook hit them on the counter. Thomas’s initial shot was blocked by Yannick Aziakonou but the ball ran straight into the striker’s path and he made no mistake.

Four minutes later, Johnson fed Cowburn whose right footer was superbly tipped over by Makepeace.

It just wasn’t going to happen for Ashington – a fact borne out just past the hour mark.

Firstly Harmison got on the end of a Sampson cross from the right but his effort was pushed away by Makepeace who then saved a header from the visiting skipper.

And a minute later, Sampson charged through but his rasping drive hit the bar and went over.

Still Ashington tried to make inroads – but still they were repelled by a resolute home defence.

In the 68th minute, substitute Paul Robinson linked with Jordan Summerly but his low cross was cleared from the danger zone.

Seven minutes later and Crook wrapped up their victory when substitute Kai Hewitson broke away down the right and thumped an effort past McHugh.

Nash blasted over before the hosts got a fourth in the third minute of stoppage time.

Ashington lost possession from a thrown in and Mason Hurworth cut inside before blasting an unerring right footer past a helpless McHugh.

Ashington vs Consett

By Brian Bennett

Danny Anderson’s first goal for two years earned Ashington a deserved share of the spoils in a 3-3 draw against league leaders Consett at The dwmedia Stadium on Saturday.

It was exciting. It was pulsating and it was captivating – and in perfect weather conditions, it was also on a day where Woodhorn Lane smashed the Ebac Northern League’s record attendance for the season to date with a superb crowd of 735 who certainly got value for money.

The Colliers went into the contest on the back of a 5-0 defeat against Thornaby the previous Saturday. But as was highlighted during the week by new skipper Ben Harmison, Ian Skinner’s side have a canny knack of bouncing back in their next outing.

And bounce back they did with aplomb. After going ahead just shy of the half hour mark with a brilliant goal by Craig Spooner, the Wansbeck outfit had to show all of their fighting qualities. Consett drew level through James Metcalfe, edged in front through an own goal and after a leveller from Luke Salmon, when ex Collier Dale Pearson made it 3-2 to the Durham side with ten minutes remaining it appeared that Ashington were going to be on the end of a hard luck story.

But the Colliers – who left every ounce of energy on the pitch – simply refused to give up and when Anderson tucked the ball into the net with four minutes of normal time remaining, it sent the home contingent into raptures.

On a pitch looking in pristine condition, it was the visitors who threatened first. Within a minute, they were awarded a free kick 20 yards out and a curling effort from Luke Carr flashed wide of home ‘keeper Adam McHugh’s left hand post.

Then in the seventh minute a ball down the channel sent Pearson through but a superb block tackle by Curtis Coppen resulted in a corner from which Calvin Smith headed over.

Two minutes later, Ashington created their first opening. The adventurous Salmon advanced towards the penalty area and when he squared the ball across, Max Cowburn’s right footer was tipped away by Kyle Hayes.

Hayes was called into the action later when he clutched a free kick from Cowburn from just outside the area then midway through the period, Karl Ross found Salmon on the right and when the midfielder cut inside, his shot was shovelled away by Hayes.

Ashington continued to press. A throw in by Ben Sampson ran kindly for Ross in the area but his missed his kick at the vital second which allowed Consett to clear.

But after knocking on the door, the Colliers eventually broke the deadlock.

On 26 minutes, Jordan Summerly ventured forward and after playing the ball to Adam Johnson, the debutant set up Cowburn whose effort hit the top of the crossbar and went over.

And two minutes later, Johnson was involved in the construction of the opener. He laid the ball off for Cowburn whose precision first time cross was magnificently headed inside the far corner by Spooner from six yards.

The Ashington crowd went wild but after Coppen had produced another brilliant tackle in the box to halt Colin Larkin, they were silenced ten minutes later when James Metcalfe equalised.

A header by Arjun Purewal came back off the post and McHugh made an outstanding save to deny the Consett skipper from the rebound, pushing the ball around for a corner on the left.

When the ball came into the box, Ashington had opportunities to clear and they were punished as Metcalfe drove inside the post from the edge of the area.

It prompted an instant response. An Anderson corner on the left was headed wide at the far post by Coppen then Salmon – who was initially blocked – picked up the rebound but stabbed just wide.

The final action saw Ross play the ball through for Spooner but a defender got back to thwart him.

Ashington were caught cold at the start of the second half as within two minutes, the Steelmen took a 2-1 lead.

Consett broke quickly down the right and when Jake Orrell played the ball across the six yards box, it was deflected into his own net by Coppen.

Ashington’s response was positive. Hayes held an effort from Spooner; Cowburn had a 22 yards free-kick tipped over by the visiting ‘keeper and from the resulting corner, a header from Harmison was touched wide.

Still they took the game to the leaders and after Cowburn had shanked an effort well wide, got the equaliser on the hour through Salmon.

A corner on the right by Ross was retrieved by Harmison who hooked into the danger zone for Salmon to net with a spectacular bicycle kick.

However in the next minute, the Colliers were almost caught out when Orrell exploited space but drove wide from 22 yards.

The intensity of the game was breathtaking with the action non stop as both sides went for the jugular.

And on the 65 minutes mark, Johnson – who certainly impressed on his first appearance following his move from neighbours Blyth Town – had a great opportunity when he was released through the middle with a one on one.

He bore down on goal but his low drive was tipped away by Hayes, who showed lightening reactions to tip the ball away with Johnson looking to poke home the rebound.

Salmon fired just over following a one-two with Johnson before the visitors went into a 3-2 lead.

Substitute Darren Holden – who had replaced Larkin for the start of the second half –crossed to the far post and Pearson steered home.

Skinner threw on late substitutions including Yannick Aziakonou and seconds after his introduction, he was involved as he switched the ball out wide left to Salmon and when he crossed, Anderson tucked home at the far post.

Still the relentless action continued right until the end. Johnson tried an audacious 40 yarder after a clearance from Hayes fell to him with the ‘keeper outside of the area but his effort was weak then when play switched to the other end, Consett had a penalty shout turned down by referee Darren Williams.

Then came the final whistle – and afterwards players, officials and supporters could reflect on a game which wasn’t only a credit to the league but to football in general

Before kick-off, an impeccable minutes silence was observed for Armistice Day.
