Jake Turnbull came off the bench to score a dramatic late winner in a 4-3 result for his hometown club Ashington against Washington on Saturday.
The goal was Turnbull’s first since he joined the Woodhorn Lane set up from Heaton Stannington last month and he could not conceal his delight: “We were playing against the wind and it was tough conditions,” said the 24 year old personal trainer afterwards, “Obviously we were trying to get the three points and I was really pleased to get the winning goal. It was a great ball in from Dylan [Williamson] - who had scored our third goal - and it was left for me to put the chance away.
I took my time, saw the defender coming and put the ball through the keeper’s legs.” Cramlington-based Turnbull is enjoying his time at the club and is hoping his 87th minute strike will lead to a late flourish by the Colliers in the final straight of the season: “I’m loving it here,” he said, “It’s a great set up and a they are a smashing group of lads. We have put back to back wins together and have ten league games remaining. We are currently in eighth place in the first division of the Ebac Northern League and we’ll be looking to finish the campaign as high as we can.”
