Ashington spent 8 seasons amongst English Football's Elite between 1921 and 1929. After being elected into the Football League third Division North from the North Eastern League as well as local rivals Darlington, Hartlepool and Durham City the Colliers enjoyed good success with a number of superb performances against sides such as Wolves, Coventry and Tranmere Rovers.
A record League crowd of almost 10,000 saw Ashington win their first Football League game at home to Grimsby Town with Dickinson scoring the only ground at Portland Park.
In 1923/24 Ashington achieved a best finish of 8th before finally dropping out of the Football League in 1929 when the Colliers became one of the first teams to miss out on re-election.
